The Golden Eye 35mm Cam (part one…)
We’ve had a bunch of requests for a review of the Golden Eye Cam… for those who are not familiar with this wacky 35mm, it’s a white and gold cam with a giant opening flash. Visually, it’s a really nice design and comes in a very elaborate gift box. The downside, everybody keeps emailing us because they didn’t want to drop eighty bucks on one.
Ya, it’s expensive. But who wouldn’t be intrigued by a giant flying flash that springs to life with the push of a button? We finally gave in and had one shipped in from China. First impressions were great- the presentation box is wonderful, and enclosed is a well designed poster that tells you all about the camera. (if you can read Chinese, which I cannot.) Pull on a golden ribbon and out pops your little white cam, and underneath are a pack of stickers that you can choose from to customize the face. Add a few batteries and you’ve got quite a flash as well.
As I’ve said many times, I am a sucker for good packaging. This cam would look fantastic on the shelf of any store, and you would be drawn right to it. But, and there is always that but.. it arrived with a rattling sound somewhere in the camera. A few emails to the eBay store yielded nothing, but we’ll keep trying. Regardless, we brought it along to run a few rolls thru it.
Like light leaks? Oh, you’ll have it with this one. My guess is that there is something cracked in the guts near the film plane, so we’ll dissect it for the next review and hopefully can diagnose the issue. But enjoy a few images from the Golden Eye, I really don’t mind the leak that much at all.. it’s just a little too big.
We’ll be back with more from the Golden Eye, hopefully with a working model. Until then, if anyone has shot with one, and has some images they would like to share, please forward them in.
