The Holga lens collection: wide, tele & fisheye

I have to say this was a product that I had hoped was coming to market soon. As we saw in the BC vs. Non BC test, I was pretty impressed with the Holga Filter set, and specifically the clear diffusion filter when used with black and white film. Holga seems to have really stepped up realized that there is a pretty good market for accessories, and lenses are an easy to produce and can yield some great results. And how do you attach one? Unlike the Diana, you simply slide it on the existing lens. They are very quick to grab out of your bag, slap one on and then toss it right back in the bag.

Since with a Holga you are not viewing through the shooting lens, you can’t see how the lens is effecting the image- but that it just part of the fun. The set did come with a pop on viewfinder, which I will try when I test the lenses with the Holga 120n. You will get a feel for the lenses after the first few rolls, and I am going to guess that the wide lens is going to be your favorite… so lets look at some results with centered object about 2 meters away….

So far so good. The Tele lens is really not a good choice for close objects, but the Wide lens really does a great job with the 35mm format. Nice expansion of view, not too much distortion, a very quick way to open a shot up and get a nice wide look without changing cameras. The Fisheye is not made for 35mm format- it really needs a square format to produce a nice round image. So we’ll give that one another chance later this week. Now a series with an object a little further back, including some trees and pumpkins for reference as to how the lenses effect the images…

While the Tele lens is still not a thriller, the Wide and Fisheye lenses work much better the I had expected. We’ve tested the Wide angle lens for the LC-A, and it was stunning- a little expensive, but worth every penny. Here is one advantage these lenses have: I picked each of the up for about $12.99 a piece. That’s a pretty cheap way to make your Holga into a wide angle camera. I can’t say that I will be shooting with the Tele or Fisheye too much, but the Wide Angle lens had earned a spot in my ever crowding camera bag.
