The harinezumi is coming

I spent today enjoying the 70 degree weather and finishing up the last frames on my Ikimono 110 camera before driving all the way to a Walmart to drop it off for processing. I have become quite fond of 110 in the last few weeks, and have been testing three different cameras. So when I got an email from my friends at Powershovel, and images of their newest creation, I was very excited to see the familiar shape of a 110 cartridge. But it’s not a 110 camera. It has a secret… a big one.

I like the video too. Did you say what the price is going to be? And where can we get one? Freestyle?

I watched the videos and I have to say I’m interested…they have a low-fi, super8, dreamy quality to it that I’d love to be able to whip out and film things. The problem w/ digital camcorders to me is that they are too sharp, too clear…the video from this looks nice and soft. I’d probably be more interested in it as a video camera than a “camera camera” after watching the vids.

I use the second generation of the digital camera designed for toddlers by Fisher Price (r) the first generation had a rectangular led screen; mine has a square screen; and now there’s another generation that’s supposedly somewhat water proof. We used the first generation in my early childhood classroom of two and three year olds. They made some great photos. They were already used to seeing me run around with my Diana and other cameras
documenting their activities. I used to post some of my work that I did with the Fisher Price on the toycamera site; but in the spirit of keeping the work lowfi I moved them to another site and then I found flickr. Using the Fisher Price was sort of like making independent films or music or writing in a style that doesn’t fit into a specific genre category; Ifound it hard to find a place to “fit in”. But I guess that is changing. When I used my Dianas in the 1970’s I got my share of strange responses then. Nothing dirty about it; I promise (-: Ms Corky

I saw this when the powershovel website was teasing us all with a preview. I actually really want one of these for the sole purpose of making cheap plastic videos. I wonder how hard it will be to find in the UK.

Ms Corky- Which cam have you been using? Oh, and the dirty part is a weird worpress filter that we can’t seem to adjust correctly… maybe it thought ‘toy digital cam’ was dirty…

How can a comment look dirty?

I’ve been using a “Toy Digital Camera” for a couple years now: It made by Fisher Price.

It’s cute, but if they want to get my attention they’ll have to build a digital camera that doesn’t need batteries to work.

I think this question will be hotly debated… its going to be one of those real cutting edge cams like the Blackbird, which I give them credit- they push the envelope and create some truly unique cameras… we’ll have one to test soon, and will publish the results as soon as we can…

I suspected something like this might have been in the works when a person started asking specific question in the Toy Camera flickr group about what users would want in a digital toy.
I also suspected that Powershovel was behind it….Not sure it’ll convince me, though I think the concept is unique enough to generate a cult following.
